The Magnetic ink character recognition code (MICR Code) is a character-recognition technology used by the banking industry in India to ease the processing and clearance of cheques. The MICR code is found at the bottom of cheques and typically includes the document-type indicator, bank code, bank account number, cheque number, cheque amount, and a control indicator.
The MICR code has nine digits in it. The first three digits in the MICR code represent the city code of the city in which the bank branch is located. The next three digits stand for the bank code while the last three digits represent the bank branch code.
